March 20, 2015 is the deadline to sign up for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) with the Vermont office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Applications received after that date will still be accepted, but may not be funded this year. This program provides financial and technical assistance to install conservation practices such as cover crops and pasture management to reduce soil erosion, improve water quality, and improve wildlife habitat. Cover crops are particularly beneficial for slowing the velocity of runoff from rainfall and snowmelt, reducing soil loss due to sheet and rill erosion. Over time, a cover crop regimen will increase soil organic matter, leading to improvements in soil structure, stability, and increased moisture and nutrient holding capacity for plant growth.

Last year, NRCS provided more than $8.9 million in EQIP financial assistance to Vermont farmers. Vermont NRCS also sets aside 10 percent of the Vermont EQIP financial assistance program for the historically underserved, which include beginning farmers, socially disadvantaged farmers, limited resource producers, and veterans.

Vermont NRCS offices have more information about conservation planning and financial assistance to fund conservation practices.
